The innovative, sustainable design of this interdisciplinary science teaching and research facility expresses Swarthmore’s strong commitment to science and the environment. A new addition unites three renovated science buildings into a LEED Certified facility that seamlessly connects with the outdoors. A central learning commons with café is located within a sun-lit atrium.
Unique sustainable design solutions, including techniques for infiltration, harvesting and reuse of site stormwater, make the Center a teaching tool that promotes awareness of human impact on the natural world and environmental responsibility. Students are able to monitor the building’s energy use through a display in the atrium. EYP completed this project in collaboration with Helfand Architecture.
