EYP Architect Leads Tour and Presents on MIT's Baker House
EYP Architect David Foxe recently led a tour and gave a presentation on the historyand design significance of MIT's Baker House (Alvar Aalto, 1946-49). The presentation, which was bookended by a discussion of the Saarinen chapel/auditorium pair and the context of the MIT campus landscape, was one of a series of guest lectures on mid-century modernism by outside speakers for a graduate course in history/theory/criticism. Topics covered in the tour included the interaction of typology and student culture, evolution and modifications over time, and the broader resonances of material details and variations. Having been a resident of Baker House and a tour guide since 1999, this is estimated as David Foxe's 167th tour of the polygonal dormitory nicknamed "the pregnant worm" by early 1950s residents who chose it purely based on its outline on the campus map.
