EYP Selected to Provide Conceptual Design For Department of Energy Project

EYP, as part of a winning team assembled by Bergmann Associates, was recently selected to produce a Conceptual Design Report on the renovation of two 40-year-old buildings on the Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory campus, located in Upton, NY.

The project entails analyzing and evaluating renovation options for approximately 71,000 square feet of physics and chemistry research laboratories in two buildings to relieve the pent-up demand for new research laboratory space. EYP will lead the architecture and lab planning scope of the project, with Bergmann providing the administrative lead and MEP engineering services. The study will explore ways of promoting greater social and scientific interaction, plan infrastructure replacement while the buildings remain occupied, develop strategies for phasing and logistics, identify cost and schedule, and discuss the pros and cons associated with each option.

The Brookhaven National Lab is the home of many science "big machines," including the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider, where a 2.4-mile circumference ring (visible from space) accelerates atoms close to the speed of light to understand the behavior of matter; and the National Synchrotron Light Source II, which provides intense focused light spanning the electromagnetic spectrum from the infrared through x-rays. These facilities attract thousands of world-class researchers who come to collaborate to achieve breakthroughs at the interface of life and physical sciences. Research priorities include nanotechnology, life sciences, high energy/ nuclear physics, and homeland security.
