New York Times Article Profiles EYP Renovation at NY Botanical Garden
EYP's renovation of the Lorillard snuff mill, located on the grounds of the New York Botanical Garden, was highlighted in the New York Times' recent article, "From Tobacco Leaves to Wedding Bouquets, 169 Years in the Bronx".
The article discusses the snuff mill's extensive history, including its use as an early home of what is now Lorillard Inc., makers of Newport, Kent, True, and other cigarettes, as well as its grant in 1915 to the botanical garden for use as a shop and storehouse. Scheduled to reopen in the spring of 2010, the currently underway $10.5-million renovation and restoration includes a new kitchen, bathrooms, and elevator, repointing of exterior walls, new offices for the horticultural staff, installation of storm windows, and other conservation and sustainability measures.
