Harvard's iconic House System requires systematic renewal to support its residential life program while addressing complex historic preservation, programming, energy, sustainability, code and regulatory issues.
Our multidisciplinary study provides strategic guidance to the University and future teams of architects and engineers. Each constituent building is a work of cultural significance that deserves careful stewardship, as well as a structure that serves its inhabitants and their active and changing uses. Our guidelines give careful consideration to how new spaces would fit within the existing shells; how the shells could be improved to become more energy-efficient enclosures; and how exterior spaces and materials would relate to the buildings they adjoin.
