The average age of a classroom at Virginia Tech is approximately 38 years. As such, many classrooms lacked the basic infrastructure needed to implement technology-based instructional programs. The goal of the 2006 Classroom Renovation study was to document the current condition of 168 general purpose classrooms, and make recommendations for improvements.
The study addressed both the quantity and quality of the learning environment. Evaluations were made to determine each classroom's ability to accommodate both current needs and emerging pedagogical trends. After identifying the university's classroom needs, the master plan charted a path for accomplishing the necessary improvements. Prototypical classroom layouts and planning and tracking tools were developed to track the incremental phases of renovation and new construction.
