The 2010 Campus Master Plan Update for Transylvania anticipates rising initiatives at an opportune juncture when most of the campus improvements advanced by the plan of 2002 have been realized. The Plan Update identifies a series of capital initiatives: a new museum and research center expanding the library and accommodating the University’s historic collections; the cyclical renewal of instructional spaces coordinated with the renovation of Hazelrigg Hall for the social sciences; and sites identified for phased residence hall improvements and a new facility for student social events. The University, as many of its peers, has committed to advancing environmental sustainability and resource conservation. The Plan Update recommits and elevates Transylvania’s efforts for responsible environmental stewardship. Campus development principles focus on linking and enhancing existing historic open spaces, featuring a pedestrian spine through several precincts. The Plan proposes to retain and extend the historic urban character of the nineteenth-century streetscape along North Broadway, a featured urban corridor noted in Lexington’s City Plan.
